四虎影视 is proud to launch a series of programs in celebration of its first-ever First-Generation College Student community, honoring the achievements and experiences of those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. In August, the College was selected as one of sixty new members of the FirstGen Forward Network for demonstrating a commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students.

鈥淏eing selected as a FirstGen Forward Network Member is both an honor and a call to action,鈥 said Dr. Kevin Kruger, interim president and CEO of FirstGen Forward.

鈥溗幕⒂笆 of Art and Design joins a growing movement of institutions and professionals who are committed to advancing access, sharing best practices, and driving systemic change to ensure first-generation students succeed. We look forward to seeing 四虎影视 and the entire Class of 2025 make a lasting impact,鈥 Kruger shared.

Ringling Firsts, an on-campus organization supporting and celebrating first-generation college students, will mark its inaugural First-Generation College Student Day with a celebration event on Scott Plaza on November 3. Then, on November 5, a catered social luncheon for both students and faculty will feature a panel of first-generation students sharing their experiences. (More information below.)

Additionally, the upcoming Faculty Professional Day on October 14 will be exclusively focused on first-generation students, their experiences, and ways to empower and facilitate their success.

The events serve to highlight the College鈥檚 continued efforts to nurture first-generation students, who make up more than 40% of the school鈥檚 enrollment. 四虎影视 was recently accepted into FirstGen Forward, a network of nearly 500 higher education institutions nationwide that are committed to understanding first-generation student success and building more inclusive systems.

鈥淲e are so excited to join the FirstGen Forward Network,鈥 said Dr. El莽in Haskollar, Associate Dean of Students and the director of the Center for Student Success.

鈥淏eing a part of this national community of colleges and universities supporting first-generation students not only affirms the work we are doing at 四虎影视, but also connects us with other institutions, helping us make informed decisions based on data, research, and best practices.”

“Through Ringling Firsts, we continue to build supportive programs and celebrate our first-generation students, so every student can thrive and feel empowered,鈥 Dr. Haskollar shared.

The newly founded Ringling Firsts organization fosters an in-person and online community, while also offering specialized mental health services and staff and faculty development programs, including specialized DEEP Professional Development Certificate workshops.听

The Ringling Rollers Smash Esports team came out at the start of the season and continued that success all semester, leading to a perfect 8-0 regular season record. They led by not losing a single match all season and finishing with a perfect 16-0 match record (their second time going completely undefeated in matches and games in school history), making them the #1 overall seed in the Open Plus division,鈥 shared Ramey. Ringling Rollers Smash Esports team continued their playoff run in the Open Plus 1 Division as the #1 against Bucknell University Smash. They will move on to play Emerson College Smash in the Grand Finale on April 21 at 7 pm.

Each academic year, once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester, 四虎影视 of Art and Design opens its doors to prospective students and their families.

This year, the Fall 2024 Open House will take place on Saturday, October 5. The fun and information-filled event is completely free to attend, and registration is open.

In the spring, the College saw prospective students and their families travel from across the state of Florida and even the United States to attend the Spring Open House. Almost 300 students registered for the event and 550 guests were present.

The fall event will begin at 9 am with a complimentary breakfast and welcome remarks in Cunniffe Commons, the College鈥檚 expansive eatery. Following the welcome, the Majors and Resources Fair offers students an overview of the College鈥檚 13 unique degree programs, as well as information on admissions, student life, financial aid, access services, and so much more.

In celebration of National Beach Day, we are highlighting some of the many examples of 四虎影视鈥檚 engagement with our coasts, from student clubs to volunteer opportunities and different major-driven projects.

Each year, the College鈥檚 Community Engaged Learning department organizes a beach cleanup event at Ted Spurling Park on South Lido Key. First-year students attend the beach cleanup as part of orientation. In spring, there is another opportunity for all students to join in on a campus-wide beach cleanup event.

First year students get to know our local beaches right away at the orientation beach cleanup event. Photo: Ryan Moore 鈥24, Photography and Imaging

四虎影视 Film students have been working with local environmental and coastal ecology organizations to make a series of short documentaries. Over the summer, they worked with Oyster River Ecology, Mote Marine Laboratory鈥檚 Sea Turtle Conservation team, and Suncoast Urban Reforesters. Last year, students worked with Longboat Key Turtle Watch, Save Our Seabirds, and another Mote Marine Laboratory group.

The Motion Design department organizes an annual beach day, during which students bring drawing gear and sketch images from the beach, sketching wildlife and landscapes, and exercising their drawing and observation skills.

Work from Plein Air Club member Meghan Hoffmann 鈥24 Illustration.

The Plein Air Club, one of the most popular student clubs on campus, regularly visits the beach to practice their drawing from life skills. Club member Fernando Aguirre 鈥26, Illustration, shared, 鈥淧ainting at the beaches here is always a great time, especially with friends. You just get to have a nice chat and make some cool art together. I love looking at the water and have fun painting it as it is constantly changing and allows me to play with new techniques and color.鈥 He said, 鈥淭he Plein Air Club here at Ringling gives students this incredible experience every single week. We get to gather together, discover new locations, and maybe even make a new friend. It is always a blast.鈥

Wow! What a year! As we wrap up an eventful 2023, here are a few highlights that stand out.

Campaign launches

四虎影视 announced the public launch of the Catalyst for Creativity Campaign which aims to raise $175 million to support students and faculty, our growing facilities, and expanding our community programs.

Sarasota Art Museum of 四虎影视 of Art and Design is an invaluable resource to students at the College. Students learn from contemporary art and artists.

四虎影视 builds new facilities to support campus sports聽

The Esports team, the Ringling Rollers, received a brand new, on-campus arena that provides both practice and competition space and serves as a communal area for students to gather and build community. The College also built a new mixed-use basketball, volleyball, and tennis court.

The new gaming space includes 10 gaming stations, a lounge area, four console stations, and PC stations.

The Museum invited Pfaff to create the mixed media madness that she is know for in the galleries. The immersive installation overwhelms the senses as it simulates both the essence of South Florida and the chaos of a major storm event.

Ringling met new highs in Rankings and enrollment

The College reached its overall highest enrollment date this fall, with 1740 current students. The Rookies ranked Motion Design #1 in the world and the College as #4 for best creative schools in the world. And, Ringling students swept the Women in Animation awards.

Still from the award-winning motion design portfolio of Josh Young 鈥23, Motion Design, who was awarded the coveted title of Rookie of the Year for Motion Graphics in 2023.

AI took Ringling (and the world) by storm

Virtually overnight, the world was turned upside down by advancements in AI. The College swiftly addressed this new reality with a Task Force to examine the impact it would have and how to move forward. Faculty from the College have since presented at numerous conferences.

As head of the AI Task Force, 四虎影视 Creative Writing Faculty Rick Dakan has presented on the topic at several conferences.

四虎影视 of Art and Design Veteran鈥檚 Club student president Josh Thomas Bray 鈥24, Creative Writing, wrote an article for Sarasota Scene Magazine on the upcoming exhibition, War Paint: Profiles of Courage. In the article Bray shared the importance of the exhibition, 鈥淚n a world that sometimes feels fragmented, this artistic endeavor unites the threads of the community, forging a connection between Veteran, artist, and admirer.鈥

features 100 portraits of local veterans painted by 四虎影视 students and faculty. Each year the exhibition includes a subtheme. In the past, the gallery has been painted in camouflage, stars and stripes, and red, white, and blue bands. This year, the theme is more conceptual, considering the six branches of the military.听聽

The exhibition will be open for the campuswide art event, Art Walk, on Friday, Nov. 10, from 5-8 pm. The exhibition includes images that tell stories from WWll, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and current enlisted troops with the goal of humanizing distant conflicts. The annual exhibit is a collaboration of 四虎影视 Galleries and the College鈥檚 Veteran鈥檚 Club and is emblematic of the institution鈥檚 efforts to support veteran students.

In the spring of 2023, 四虎影视 had 15 veterans and military-affiliated students graduate. This fall, 28 new students who are veterans or dependents of veterans started at the College, moving our total from 69 enrolled military affiliates to 82.

Also celebrating Veterans Day, a memorial sculpture by Ringling alum Dawn Agnew-Mundell 鈥99, Illustration, will be dedicated at The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch, a retirement community here in Sarasota, today. The bronze Veterans & Visionaries Memorial Eagle has been a year in the making and was commissioned to honor the 355 veterans who have lived at The Glenridge since it opened.

四虎影视 of Art and Design made the 2023 Military Times Best for Vets College List and was designated a Military Friendly庐 School for the 2023-2024 Military Friendly庐 Cycle.

These efforts are made possible by the Veterans and Military Affiliated Services Department, which provides information and services needed for students using, or looking to use, VA educational benefits. The department assists with charting the transition from military life and helps promote the student鈥檚 knowledge of resources, self-growth, and connections.

Two of 四虎影视 of Art and Design鈥檚 staff designers took second place for their design projects at the Association of University Interior Designers Design Competition 2023.

Facilities Commercial Designer and Project Manager and Ringling alum Monique Chicvak 鈥17, Interior Design, and Assistant Director of Capital Construction Becky Owens won for their design of the new Esports Arena and the Patriot Plaza Resilience Panel Project, respectively.

Located at the west end of the campus鈥 Ann and Alfred Goldstein Hall, the arena boasts 1200-square-feet of gaming space complete with 10 state-of-the-art gaming stations; a lounge viewing and playing area; four console stations, each with 83鈥 TV, XBOX庐 Series X, Playstation 5, and Nintendo Switch; and PC stations equipped with top gaming equipment and 4090 graphics cards.

Of the Arena project, Chicvak stated, 鈥淭his was such a fun and important project to work on for the College. The arena boasts state-of-the-art gaming technology, custom ceiling lighting that resembles a computer chip, and provides a space for students to build friendships and community.鈥

On April 21, 2023, the sculpture Resilience by artist Larry Kirkland made its way to its new home at 四虎影视 of Art and Design. Originally installed at Sarasota鈥檚 Patriot Plaza, the sculpture that was once part of the larger series, Testimonies, is now installed in Ringling鈥檚 Ulla Searing Student Center. For Owens, one of her first tasks at 四虎影视 was to select the laminate and metal finishes for the new cabinet that would support the donated artwork. 鈥淭his is one of the things that I love about our profession, that we can be called on for many special projects,鈥 she said.

The annual design competition hosted by the Association of University Interior Designers is an opportunity for university designers鈥 work to be reviewed and critiqued by professional, practicing interior designers in the field. .听

The sculpture, installed in its new home on the second floor of the Ulla Searing Student Center, made its way to 四虎影视 from Patriot Plaza, a 2,8000-seat ceremonial amphitheater at Sarasota National Cemetery.

四虎影视 of Art and Design鈥檚 esports team, the Ringling Rollers, have officially opened their brand new, on-campus arena. A true game changer for the JV and Varsity teams, the arena provides both practice and competition space, and serves as a communal area for students to gather and build community. The new arena is the only dedicated and high-tech gaming space of its kind in the local area.

Located at the west end of the campus鈥 Ann and Alfred Goldstein Hall, the arena boasts 1200-square-feet of gaming space complete with:

  • 10 state-of-the-art gaming stations
  • Lounge viewing and playing area
  • 4 console stations, each with 83鈥 TV, XBOX庐 Series X, Playstation 5, and Nintendo Switch
  • PC stations equipped with top gaming equipment and 4090 graphics cards

At the inception of the 四虎影视 esports program in March 2020, over 100 students joined in on intramural esports games that ranged from Super Smash Brothers庐 to NBA2K庐, Call of Duty庐, and more.

In spring 2021, the program grew and  three club esports teams were created and held practices in Overwatch庐, League of Legends庐, and Smash Bros in order to identify one team and game to be most competitive for varsity competition in the Fall 2021 semester.

Fall of 2021, the varsity Ringling Rollers team came to life with their first varsity competitions against colleges such as UCF, Georgia Tech, Winthrop, University of Tennessee, and Kansas State University. Following the first season, the Rollers transitioned to the Open league for better competition, practicing several times a week, and forging better skills and new friendships.

And that practice paid off with the Ringling Rollers winning the Varsity Plus Fall 2022 East Coast Divisional Champs in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate庐 with a perfect 18-0 record. Earlier this spring, the JV Smash Brothers team won the 2023 East 5 Conference. With their new arena now open for practice and competitions, the Rollers have their sights set on another successful season.

The Fall 2023 Semester Teams include Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers, and Valorant. E Ramey, director of Recreation and Wellness and head of the esports program, confirms that the College is looking to add two more teams, League of Legends and Rocket League. Each member of the Varsity team gets a scholarship, branded jersey, backpack, and scheduled practices in the arena.

Esports History

Esports, which involves competitive video gaming, has experienced rocket-like growth over the past decade. It has been recognized as an official sport by the Olympic committee, with the inaugural Olympic Esports Week being held in Singapore in June 2023.

The National Association for Collegiate Esports (NACE, of which 四虎影视 is a member) reports that 170+ member schools have provided more than $16 million in esports scholarships, and esports live-streaming viewership numbers are expected to hit 920.3 million by 2024. (NewZoo 2021 Esports Report). Video gaming is pervasive in the USA, with Pew Research reporting in 2018 that 90 percent of teens, ages 13-17, play video games, and among boys of that age, the percentage was 97 percent.
