The team plays Super Smash Brothers Ultimate on Nintendo Switch. It is led by captain Sophie Leone 鈥�26, Illustration, and coaches Hanz Ago 鈥�23, Illustration, and James 鈥淩ivers鈥� Wade. The team is overseen by Recreation and Wellness Director and Head of Esports E Ramey. 

The Ringling Rollers Smash Esports team came out at the start of the season and continued that success all semester, leading to a perfect 8-0 regular season record. They led by not losing a single match all season and finishing with a perfect 16-0 match record (their second time going completely undefeated in matches and games in school history), making them the #1 overall seed in the Open Plus division,鈥� shared Ramey. Ringling Rollers Smash Esports team continued their playoff run in the Open Plus 1 Division as the #1 against Bucknell University Smash. They will move on to play Emerson College Smash in the Grand Finale on April 21 at 7 pm. 

四虎影视鈥檚 Esports program launched in March 2020, with over 100 students participating in intramural Esports games. In spring 2021, the program grew into three club Esports teams. From the three, the Ringling Rollers were chosen for varsity competition. Each member of the Varsity team receives a Ringing College scholarship for competing. 

In August 2023, the College opened the Esports Arena, which is equipped with 10 CORSAIR VENGEANCE i7400 Gaming PCs, Intel Core i9-13900K, NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphic cards, 64GB DDR5 5600 MTs memory, and two terabyte NVMe SSDs. Four console stations have Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. The most popular games for play are Valorant, Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers, Fortnite, and Rocket League, and teams practice twice a week.

This summer, the College will launch an Esports summer camp for students ages 12-18 and entering grades seven through 12. The camp will run in weekly sessions from June 30-July 24. Students will receive in-game training, drills, and game breakdowns, experience the Esports room, play with the coaches, have daily matches and challenges, and take regular wellness breaks. This year, the Fall 2024 Open House will take place on Saturday, October 5. The fun and information-filled event is completely free to attend, and registration is open. 

In the spring, the College saw prospective students and their families travel from across the state of Florida and even the United States to attend the Spring Open House. Almost 300 students registered for the event and 550 guests were present. 

The fall event will begin at 9 am with a complimentary breakfast and welcome remarks in Cunniffe Commons, the College鈥檚 expansive eatery. Following the welcome, the Majors and Resources Fair offers students an overview of the College鈥檚 13 unique degree programs, as well as information on admissions, student life, financial aid, access services, and so much more. 

Open House is a great opportunity to get a sneak peek into some of the other spaces across campus that may not always be accessible on the daily tours, such as the 四虎影视 Studio Labs, post-production and soundstage spaces; the Esports Arena, home to Ringling鈥檚 Varsity Team Ringling Rollers; an in-depth look at the First Year Studio Program and the work students create; residence hall tours, and more. 

Students can round out their day with an extensive portfolio presentation, where admissions counselors discuss tips and best practices for submitting the portfolio requirement. Parents can attend a session on financial aid. Lunch is also provided at the end of the day, back in Cunniffe Commons.

四虎影视 announced the public launch of the Catalyst for Creativity Campaign which aims to raise $175 million to support students and faculty, our growing facilities, and expanding our community programs.

四虎影视 builds new facilities to support campus sports聽

The Esports team, the Ringling Rollers, received a brand new, on-campus arena that provides both practice and competition space and serves as a communal area for students to gather and build community. The College also built a new mixed-use basketball, volleyball, and tennis court.

Judy Pfaff: Picking up the Pieces opened at Sarasota Art Museum聽

The Museum invited Pfaff to create the mixed media madness that she is know for in the galleries. The immersive installation overwhelms the senses as it simulates both the essence of South Florida and the chaos of a major storm event.

Ringling met new highs in Rankings and enrollment

The College reached its overall highest enrollment date this fall, with 1740 current students. The Rookies ranked Motion Design #1 in the world and the College as #4 for best creative schools in the world. And, Ringling students swept the Women in Animation awards.

AI took Ringling (and the world) by storm

Virtually overnight, the world was turned upside down by advancements in AI. The College swiftly addressed this new reality with a Task Force to examine the impact it would have and how to move forward. Faculty from the College have since presented at numerous conferences.

Facilities Commercial Designer and Project Manager and Ringling alum Monique Chicvak 鈥�17, Interior Design, and Assistant Director of Capital Construction Becky Owens won for their design of the new Esports Arena and the Patriot Plaza Resilience Panel Project, respectively.

Located at the west end of the campus鈥� Ann and Alfred Goldstein Hall, the arena boasts 1200-square-feet of gaming space complete with 10 state-of-the-art gaming stations; a lounge viewing and playing area; four console stations, each with 83鈥� TV, XBOX庐 Series X, Playstation 5, and Nintendo Switch; and PC stations equipped with top gaming equipment and 4090 graphics cards. 

Of the Arena project, Chicvak stated, 鈥淭his was such a fun and important project to work on for the College. The arena boasts state-of-the-art gaming technology, custom ceiling lighting that resembles a computer chip, and provides a space for students to build friendships and community.鈥� 

On April 21, 2023, the sculpture Resilience by artist Larry Kirkland made its way to its new home at 四虎影视 of Art and Design. Originally installed at Sarasota鈥檚 Patriot Plaza, the sculpture that was once part of the larger series, Testimonies, is now installed in Ringling鈥檚 Ulla Searing Student Center. For Owens, one of her first tasks at 四虎影视 was to select the laminate and metal finishes for the new cabinet that would support the donated artwork. 鈥淭his is one of the things that I love about our profession, that we can be called on for many special projects,鈥� she said. 

The annual design competition hosted by the Association of University Interior Designers is an opportunity for university designers鈥� work to be reviewed and critiqued by professional, practicing interior designers in the field. .听

Fall of 2021, the varsity Ringling Rollers team came to life with their first varsity competitions against colleges such as UCF, Georgia Tech, Winthrop, University of Tennessee, and Kansas State University. Following the first season, the Rollers transitioned to the Open league for better competition, practicing several times a week, and forging better skills and new friendships. 

And that practice paid off with the Ringling Rollers winning the Varsity Plus Fall 2022 East Coast Divisional Champs in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate庐 with a perfect 18-0 record. Earlier this spring, the JV Smash Brothers team won the 2023 East 5 Conference. With their new arena now open for practice and competitions, the Rollers have their sights set on another successful season.

The Fall 2023 Semester Teams include Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers, and Valorant. E Ramey, director of Recreation and Wellness and head of the esports program, confirms that the College is looking to add two more teams, League of Legends and Rocket League. Each member of the Varsity team gets a scholarship, branded jersey, backpack, and scheduled practices in the arena.

Esports History 

Esports, which involves competitive video gaming, has experienced rocket-like growth over the past decade. It has been recognized as an official sport by the Olympic committee, with the inaugural Olympic Esports Week being held in Singapore in June 2023. 

The National Association for Collegiate Esports (NACE, of which 四虎影视 is a member) reports that 170+ member schools have provided more than $16 million in esports scholarships, and esports live-streaming viewership numbers are expected to hit 920.3 million by 2024. (NewZoo 2021 Esports Report). Video gaming is pervasive in the USA, with Pew Research reporting in 2018 that 90 percent of teens, ages 13-17, play video games, and among boys of that age, the percentage was 97 percent.

鈥淚n just a few short weeks, the real fun and process begins,鈥� Ramey continued. 鈥淭he Ringling Rollers varsity arena will be opening at the end of June and will be the first step in showcasing the future of esports at 四虎影视. Our arena will feature 10 max-power computer gaming set-ups, four console setups, lounge furniture, and surrounding video viewing and streaming capabilities. I am excited to see the growth of this program and the growth of the student’s ability when the practices begin. The Rollers are rising!鈥�

According to Nick DeAngelis, head coach for the Ringling Rollers, “It鈥檚 been amazing to see the growth and success of the program in such a short time. These students have been working hard, both in the classroom, and on their skills in-game, and this season鈥檚 success was a huge reward for their hard work.”

The new 600-square-foot arena is designed to provide the Ringling Rollers with a dedicated space in which to enable and enhance their competitive endeavors. The arena will include 10 state-of-the-art gaming stations, a lounge viewing area, and an XBOX庐 station. 

The design aesthetic is minimal with a sealed concrete flooring, dark walls and ceiling to help to create a focused, competitive environment during tournaments and practice, and custom dimmable lighting to enable players and audiences to focus on the gaming monitors during matches. A large vinyl graphic on the east wall will feature the Ringling Roller鈥檚 logo and color palette. Modular upholstered lounge seating will provide spaces for gamers to brainstorm in between matches and allows viewers to watch competitions.

The arena will be located on the ground floor of the Ann and Alfred Goldstein Residence Hall and is expected to be completed this summer and ready for the Fall 2023 semester. 

The 四虎影视 esports program was founded in 2020 by E Ramey, director of recreation and student wellness at 四虎影视, to drive online esports competition against other colleges and universities during the height of COVID. The varsity team was formed in 2021 and is led by Ramey and Head Coach Nick Deangelis. Deangelis has been coaching professionally for nearly 10 years, initially in top-ranked college and semi-pro tennis. He is coaching the Ringling Rollers in Overwatch庐, Super Smash Bros.庐, and Valorant庐.

鈥淭his new arena is a great tribute to the work our athletes and coach have put into mastering their respective games and will provide a fantastic space in which they can realize their esports potential,鈥� said Ramey. 鈥淧art of the collaborative nature of creating and supporting our team, beyond the players and competition, are many roles such as branding and marketing, broadcasting and production, event coordinators, and team managers. As the Ringling Rollers and our esports program continues to grow and excel, I believe we will work with more creative disciplines and talent at the College who otherwise might not have considered being part of esports.鈥�

鈥淏eing able to play all together in the same arena will really be a great way to build team connections and interactions,鈥� said Shannon Craddock 鈥�24, Photography and Imaging major and Initiator for the Valorant team. 鈥淧laying with your team in the same room brings out a whole different feeling, because you can respond and adapt to your teammates physically, rather than just having to interpret from a voice call. I’m excited to have an esports-specific environment because playing in your room or dorm can invite distractions or computer-related issues. I can’t wait for it to be finished!鈥�

New dining hall Cunniffe Commons opening January 2023 

A new 28,000-square-foot state-of-the-art dining facility will open this month when students return for the spring semester. The new dining hall will include cuisine stations, a food market, and a teaching kitchen and has indoor and outdoor seating. The facility has been designed to meet the highest sustainability standards. Once opened, the building will replace Hammond Commons and Outtakes Caf茅.

Entertainment Design鈥檚 inaugural class to graduate in May

On Thursday, May 4, 2023, Ringling鈥檚 first cohort of Entertainment Design students will make their way across the stage at the Bradenton Area Convention Center. The students will be the first to have earned their BFA in Entertainment Design at 四虎影视. Students in the program learn to create themed spaces and environments that bring stories to life across countless industries.

March 2023 Avant-Garde gala to showcase student work and INDEX projects

On Sat., March 18, 2023, Ringling will host its signature annual costume gala. Scott Plaza will be transformed into a Boogie Wonderland for the 鈥溗幕⒂笆� Rocks the 70s鈥� themed event. Guests will enjoy costumes, cocktails, dinner, dancing, an auction, and more. This year鈥檚 event will showcase students and their work across all majors, as well as highlighting the INDEX program (Industry Experience at 四虎影视). Tickets are available online. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.

Exhibition programming at Sarasota Art Museum and Campus Galleries
2022 brought incredible artists and their work to Sarasota – on campus and in the community. The Museum welcomed exhibits by Puerto-Rican sculpture artist Daniel Lind-Ramos, Jamaican textile artist Katrina Coombs, and the Ladd brothers who brought their community-based Scrollathon to Sarasota, while the Campus Galleries showcased student and faculty work, alongside accomplished alumni including Tom and Peggy Root, and Nathan Skiles. 

PreCollege 2022 celebrates first in-person program in three years
Ringling鈥檚 PreCollege program drew 235 high school students from across the world to Sarasota in June. The group of 16- to 18-year-olds, who hailed from 37 states and 11 countries, experienced the award-winning education that 四虎影视 is known for during the four-week immersive program. This year鈥檚 in-person event followed two years of an exclusively online experience due to COVID-19. Attendance was at an all-time high, up 12.5% over 2019 when it was last held in person.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, one final battle took place for the Ringling Rollers, the final game of the year against local rival team New College Crew, of New College of Florida. 

For the Crew battle, Ringling鈥檚 MVP was Ko (Alberto Vargas) and New College鈥檚 MVP was SaMu (Jack Ries). Ringling鈥檚 Smash team ran away with a victory of 11-0 for the final score.

鈥淭his is a huge win for the Ringling Rollers and the Smash team,鈥� said E Ramey, Esports team advisor and 四虎影视鈥檚 director of recreation and wellness. 鈥淭his shows tremendous growth of our Varsity Esports program, and is an exciting indicator of where we intend to go with the sport and how we continue to excel.鈥�

Players on the winning Smash Team: Chris 鈥淔letch鈥� Fletcher 鈥�24 (Captain Falcon), Viktor 鈥淭achio鈥� Niksdorf 鈥�25 (Falcon), Jaehee 鈥淎sianShack鈥� Kim 鈥�24 (Pacman), Hanz 鈥淩awSauce鈥� Ago 鈥�23 (Pokemon Trainer), and Sophie Leone 鈥�26 (Wii-Fit Trainer).

The Winter Smash Ultimate Rollout Tournament featured a double elimination bracket with the top eight teams competing in the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center, as well as a 6v6 crew battle against New College.

Food and drinks were provided for players and spectators, and prizes were awarded for the top three placings. This was the largest Smash tournament to date with a total of 27 participants, making it the biggest tournament in 四虎影视 Esports history.
