OLLI’s Listening to Women lecture series kicks off at Sarasota Art Museum

This month, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at �Ļ�Ӱ�� begins their six part lecture series, Listening to Women, with, “Optics of Storytelling When Told by Women Journalists of Color,” featuring Sarasota journalists, Mercedes Soler, co-owner of Solmart Media and Renée James Gilmore, executive producer of ABC7’s Empowering Voices. The series hosts 16 women (including one robot) making waves in their professional fields, from culture, to engineering, to mental health.

Each week the series will highlight a new theme with a panel of influential women whose work addresses the panel topic. Guests will give talks about their fascinating careers and the varying paths that led them there.

On the theme of, “From Adversity to Advocacy: Changing the Mental Health Landscape,” Level II Certified Trauma Specialist, minister, motivational speaker, facilitator, and author, Helen Neal shares her journey from domestic trauma survivor to transforming that experience into a campaign to change the lives of hundreds of other trauma survivors.

In the second session, two passionate STEM advocates will give talks on bringing coding and robotics to community youth, and their impact on the next generation of innovators. They are joined by a third panelist, Jane, a humanoid robot.

Executive Director of Sarasota Art Museum of �Ļ�Ӱ�� of Art and Design, Virginia Shearer will give a talk about her 25+ years of experience in the field of art, including her amazing work at the Museum. She is joined by a panel of leaders from varying fields — All Faiths Food Bank leader, Sandra Frank; President of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Jennifer O. Rominiecki; and moderator Felice Schulaner, a retired Chief Human Resources Officer.

Upcoming exhibition programming and events roll out in 2023 at �Ļ�Ӱ��, Sarasota Art Museum, and OLLI

It’s a new year, and with it 2023 promises to deliver an exciting new season of exhibition programming, educational courses, and art happenings at �Ļ�Ӱ�� of Art and Design and beyond.

�Ļ�Ӱ�� Galleries and Exhibitions

�Ļ�Ӱ��’s six unique gallery spaces on campus continue with their 2022-23 exhibition season.��

“Infrastructure: Connecting Spaces + Places with Art includes 25 exhibitions and related events that afford the visitor the most direct engagement with the artwork and the unique factors related to it, as well as provides cultural opportunities within the Galleries,” said Tim Jaeger, director and chief curator of .��

During the 2023 spring semester, visitors will see the return of the annual . a docent tour with collector Barbara Basch. In addition, the College will exhibit an ambitious collection of Therman Statom’s large-scale glass works. Statom, one of a few African American glass artists practicing today, is considered a pioneer of the contemporary glass movement.��
You can also still catch now through Mar 17, a collection of landscape paintings by �Ļ�Ӱ�� alumna Lee Mayer ’72, Commercial Art, on view in The Patricia Thompson Alumni and Skylight Galleries in the historic Keating Center.��

Sarasota Art Museum

is Sarasota’s first and only museum dedicated to contemporary art. The College’s dynamic, living laboratory, the Museum offers a world-class exhibition program that will surprise, delight, and inspire.��

Registration now open for fall 2022 courses at OLLI at �Ļ�Ӱ��

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at �Ļ�Ӱ�� kicked off the fall 2022 term with an open house this week. Despite the afternoon showers, several dozen members and guests came out to attend the event and learn more about the 50-plus classes that will be offered.

The highlight of the event featured nine different instructors talking about their classes. Course topics this fall will include history, music appreciation, health, living sustainably, improvisational theater, and there’s even a course titled “50 Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do.”

“At OLLI, our goal is to enrich the lives of mature adults in Sarasota and Manatee counties by providing high-quality educational programs and social interactions that provide intellectual stimulation,” said Dr. Phyllis C. Brown, director of OLLI.

Fall classes begin September 28 and run through November 18. Classes are available during the week and range from two to eight-session courses. They are taught by volunteers, many of whom have retired from successful careers before relocating to Sarasota. Anyone “aged 50 and better” is invited to register for courses or participate in any of the workshops, special lectures, and programs held throughout the term.

Most courses are taught in person at the Sarasota Art Museum on the �Ļ�Ӱ�� Museum Campus, 1001 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236. Classes are also available virtually.

Students can enjoy a myriad of classes including “Improv Brain Games” with Will Luera, director of Improvisation at Florida Studio Theater or “Women of the American Songbook” with actress and pianist Sandra Moulin. Plus, there’s CONNECTIONS, the documentary film series, which features two films this term, Lives Well Lived and 100 Days with Tata.

“We are excited to be able to offer so many different and enriching opportunities to our community,” said Jeff Ryder, who retired after a career in the television industry and is chair of the OLLI curriculum committee. “We truly have something for everyone.”
