The 2020 National SOURCE Awards were yet again dominated by 四虎影视 of Art and Design Interior Design students. A total of seven students were recognized by the prestigious, national competition for their achievements and outstanding designs: 1 grand prize winner, 4 honorable mentions, and 2 awards of recognition. Three of the award winners were from 四虎影视:

Winner – Stefanie Voinea, Mini Metropolis

Honorable Mention – Yin Weng, Cyber Bar

Award of Recognition – Chloe Harlan, The House of Sage聽

Presented by Cooper Lighting Solutions for over 40 years, The SOURCE Awards honors the industry鈥檚 next generation of lighting designers. Normally held in conjunction with the LightFair International event, this year鈥檚 awards ceremony was set to take place in May at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Unfortunately those plans were canceled due to the pandemic, but that did not stop the ceremony from taking place. Award winners were announced and recognized during a virtual presentation instead.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited as this new approach gives us the opportunity for the first time, for our talented student winners to participate and talk about their award-winning projects, as well as the inspiration behind them,鈥 announced Kraig Kasler, president of Cooper Lighting Solutions.

The winning projects were judged on creativity and the selection and application of Cooper Lighting Solutions鈥 lighting and controls products. Specifically, the conceptual lighting design projects were judged on the blending of aesthetics and creative achievement, with additional considerations of energy efficiency, controls integration, best use of natural light and customization.

Faculty Advisor, Seongwoo Nam said, 鈥淚t was an honor and a joy to work with these amazing students. The overall competition is not just about lighting the space well – it is vital to explore all aspects of lighting design including wayfinding, efficiency and sustainability, daylighting, aesthetics, and of course human interaction. I am immensely proud of what these designers have accomplished.鈥

The winning projects appeared in Trade Magazine, Lighting Magazine, and other national and local publications. Winners are also invited to attend a class free of charge at SOURCE, Cooper Lighting Solutions鈥 educational center in Peachtree City, Georgia. The grand prize winner, Stefanie Voinea, received a $2,000 award and the honorable mention winners each received a $500 award.

Congratulations to Stefanie, Yin, and Chloe, and to their faculty advisor, Seongwoo Nam!

Showcasing what can happen when creative potential leads to professional accomplishments, 四虎影视 of Art and Design鈥檚 Alumni Honor Wall gives guests to the campus an inspiring look at what Ringling alumni have accomplished in their professional careers. It also encourages current students to envision where their own careers might lead.

For three years, this on-campus installation in the Keating Center has paid tribute to award-winning Ringling graduates who have made positive impacts in their career fields. On Jan. 24, Ringling President Dr. Larry R. Thompson led the annual ceremony for the 10 honorees of 2020. Now, year-round, passersby can learn about some of Ringling鈥檚 most accomplished graduates by visiting the Honor Wall, which was designed by Graphic Design Department Head Jeff Bleitz.

鈥淚t鈥檚 inspiring for our current and prospective students to be able to see some of the top alumni of the College. I鈥檓 so glad that they have such a high-traffic, highly visible space on campus to be honored,鈥 said Susan Borozan, Ringling鈥檚 director of alumni relations and engagement. 鈥淲e have a treasure trove of alumni and this is our way to recognize them.鈥

The work of this year鈥檚 recognized alumni spans the creative spectrum.

Congratulations to Nia Gibbs (Interior Design, 鈥18) for winning the Most Outstanding Presentation award in this year鈥檚 Robert Bruce Thompson National Lighting Competition!

This competition, the largest Lighting Fixture Design competition in the United States, invites work from the best of the best in Interior Design, with its own committee recommending entrants be of undergraduate senior or graduate level. Students from myriad programs compete, including architectural engineering programs, architecture programs, interior design programs, theatre, and industrial design programs.

No stranger to this competition, 四虎影视 Interior Design has produced the most winners in the history of the Robert Bruce Thompson National Lighting Competition.

Nia鈥檚 Artist Statement

For this year鈥檚 RBT lighting competition, we were challenged with creating a floor lamp for a modern art museum located in Washington State. The main challenge was creating a light fixture that would not only be a statement piece and light the lobby of the museum, but would also be durable enough to move and lift for artwork changes. I believe this year鈥檚 challenge was more about making a sculptural statement piece that complemented the modern qualities of the museum, rather than only focusing on the specific lighting needs.

My design, INFINITY, symbolizes the joy of being alive, and the spirit of those lost that remain alive in our hearts. The fixture itself is an abstract version of the word ALIVE, with each fixture representing a letter. This fixture comes in separate parts that snap together, which allows for a greater use of flexibility within the museum. Each part can also be customized in different sizes for the user鈥檚 particular need, and to serve other functions in the museum. INFINITY is user-friendly can be seen as an art installation that people can walk through and touch, and is easily movable for changes. The material is a transparent metal that allows illumination changes based on daylight levels, making it energy efficient. Color-changing OLED panels are built into this fixture, allowing light to emit from 360掳, creating a soft, mesmerizing glow that is able to change colors depending on the event taking place. The CRI value is 85+, in order to ensure quality lighting for the artwork as well as visual comfort.

My professor, Seongwoo Nam, was an instrumental part in this competition, and he did a wonderful job of preparing us and carefully helping each student along the way. Our class brainstormed and sketched numerous ideas before settling on the one we thought would work best for this modern museum, and Seongwoo spent so much time, care, and effort with each one of us, making sure that we were proud of our final design. Without the help and care from my professor, we wouldn鈥檛 have had the outcome that we did, and I thank him for that.

I am so proud to have been apart of this RBT lighting competition and to have walked away with the Most Outstanding Presentation award. It means so much to me to be recognized in the midst of such high-quality work that was entered, and this is mainly a credit to Ringling students and instructors and all of our hard work.
