Fig鈥檚 exhibition, opened on November 17 and depicts scenes from the 2023 Rijksmuseum exhibition of Johannes Vermeer paintings in Amsterdam. Fig鈥檚 small paintings feature museum-goers taking a close look at the famous paintings鈥攊ntimate scenes portrayed on an intimate scale. Fig鈥檚 paintings range from seven to 14 inches in height, mirroring the scale of the paintings he depicts鈥擵ermeer鈥檚 paintings ranged from seven to 20 inches on average.   

The works expand on his decade-long Contemplation series, in which he captures his subjects: a focus that shifts from the artworks themselves, their viewers, and the gallery or museum space that hosts the whole scene. The works explore how people engage with or contemplate artworks in public spaces.

The works in Contemplating Vermeer bring the viewer’s attention to the social and cultural world around art. They simultaneously highlight the unfixed nature of works as they continue to create relationships throughout their existence and make the viewer distinctly aware of the jarring differences between the eras in which Vermeer and Fig are painting. In Vermeer: Girl with a Red Hat and Girl with a Flute / Rijksmuseum, a woman with black sunglasses on top of her head that look much like Wayfarers鈥攁n iconic symbol of contemporary culture鈥攊s a dramatic contrast to Vermeer鈥檚 Girl with a Red Hat, c. 1669. The large brim of the hat is thick with the fluff of feathers and screams 鈥渉istoric artifact鈥�.

The works are as much art objects as they are learning opportunities and opportunities for self-reflection. They encourage close looking by making the viewer self-aware of their behavior as museum-goers and invoking curiosity as we watch others perform it.

Both Nguyen and Ashley are teaching artists. Ashley teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Nguyen is an Assistant Professor of Art at Wesleyan University. 

Nguyen鈥檚 exhibit offers lessons in history and mythology, nation-making, and national identity. as she layers historical documents with haikus, symbols, mythologies, and maritime law, to name just a few of the narratives that are cosmically aligned in the show. In Revolutions of the Same and the Other Nguyen combines 46 鈥渇lags of convenience鈥� into 23 woven tapestries, inventing new dual national relationships and accompanying anthems that combine the anthems for each of those nations. The lesson in geopolitics is imbued with humor and wit, and even a little sarcasm. 

Ashley, too, uses humor in her lessons on deconstructing the field of painting, by literally inflating the canvas. Her comically large sculptural paintings overfill the large galleries they inhabit. The slumpy, lumpy inflatables look like rogue parade floats that have gone on to live exciting lives and maybe even joined a very aesthetic cult. Humor, empathy, and play become the foundations for an embodied visitor experience for these works鈥攖he term viewing experience seems to miss the mark.

Each Trustee Scholar exemplifies dedication, originality, brilliance, ambition, and talent in their field of study, as well as service to the College and the community. Faculty from each academic department and representatives from the Office of Student Life nominate two students from the junior class in their areas for consideration as Trustee Scholars for the following year. The Board of Trustees chooses one from each of those categories to be named Trustee Scholar. Two students were selected from Graphic Design this year due to a tie vote. 

The College鈥檚 annual Trustee Scholar Awards celebration will take place on Friday, November 8, 2024. The event will begin with a reception, followed by a formal ceremony during which each Scholar will be introduced. Scholars will then have the opportunity to share remarks with guests鈥攆amily, friends, or College faculty and staff鈥攁bout how they are helping to inspire the new future of art and design.

The Trustee Scholarship is awarded annually Nominees are required to submit a written statement and a portfolio of their work for the Trustee Scholar Selection Committee, composed of members of the Board of Trustees to review and make a selection. 

The winners are selected based on:

• Exceptional creative talent, communication skills, and distinction of mind
• Contributions to the department, College, and/or community
• Leadership, citizenship, mentorship

For the second consecutive year, Motion Design was ranked #1 in the world for Motion Graphics. The program has occupied top positions in the rankings almost every year and has celebrated three Rookie of the Year Awards over the last five years. The program grabbed #2 in the United States for Visual Effects, thanks to the work of MD faculty member Christian Huthmacher, who has worked hard to bring the program鈥檚 VFX work into the spotlight. They were also ranked  #11 in the World for 2D Animation, and #3 in the United States. Morgan Williams has been incorporating more hand-drawn elements alongside the 2D computer animation project assignments.  

Ringling鈥檚 3D Computer Animation program once again ranked #1 in the United States for Production Excellence and #3 worldwide. They were also ranked #1 in the United States for Production Excellence in 3D Animation and #5 worldwide.

Virtual Reality Development was named #1 in the United States for Production Excellence in Immersive Media and #2 in the United States for Immersive Media. 

Game Art claims #2 in the United States for Game Design and Development. The College was also named #2 in the United States for Concept Art.  

These designations are especially significant today, as colleges all around the country face challenges and even close down.
