April 2026, 四虎影视 of Art and Design took center stage at the Sarasota Film Festival, serving as a host venue and showcasing a wealth of student and alumni work across animation, narrative film, and documentary, as well as a forward-looking conversation about the future of cinema itself.

Now in its 28th year, the Sarasota Film Festival ran April 10鈥19, 2026, celebrating its mission of honoring the art of filmmaking while bringing cultural and educational value to the community. 四虎影视’s Morganroth Auditorium, located at 2363 Bradenton Road, served as one of the festival’s key venues for a packed final weekend of screenings and events.

Beautify by Elizaveta Makarenko ’25, Computer Animation

On Friday, April 17, the Morganroth Auditorium hosted an Animated Shorts block featuring 12 films by 四虎影视 Computer Animation students and recent alumni. The lineup was a testament to the breadth and originality that define the program, spanning wildly different tones, styles, and subject matter.

Among the highlights: Date Knight followed a young knight who donned a handmade dragon costume to catfish a real dragon he matched with on a dating app, only for the scheme to spiral into chaos. Praying for Love took a darkly comic look at a female praying mantis struggling with her cannibalistic tendencies while searching for romance. Dogs of Bishkek sent a young boy named Sasha on a tense, wintry chase through Kyrgyzstan as he tried to bring sausages to his sick mother, only to be stalked by the city’s most fearsome stray. And The Legend of King Nibbles offered a fable about a hamster king brought low by his own greed.

Other films in the block explored themes of identity and self-acceptance (Beautify), the pressures of competitive sports and overbearing parents (Loud and Proud), coexistence between opposites (Total Opposites), and the chaos that ensued when gold miners couldn’t agree (Striking Gold).

On Saturday, April 18, the festival brought a timely and thought-provoking conversation to campus. SFF Talks: AI in Film 鈥 What’s Next? in the Morganroth Auditorium was a free event featuring a showcase of AI-made short films followed by a panel discussion with leading voices in the field.

Panelists included 四虎影视 faculty member Rick Dakan, who is the head of 四虎影视’s AI Task Force, launching the new Creative Technologies major, and co-launching the Center for the Creative Economy; Professor John Licato of USF’s Bellini College of AI, Cybersecurity and Computing; and filmmaker and SFF Managing Director Paul Ratner, among other AI educators.

The festival weekend closed on Sunday, April 19, with Best of Ringling Film, a two-hour showcase from noon to 2 pm featuring the strongest short films from 四虎影视’s Film department. The program included the premiere of Gamble Creek Farms, a short documentary produced by film students in partnership with Florida Eco Films and Ringling’s Index program. Rounding out the program were five additional short films: Huzzah! directed by Claire Simmons, A1 directed by Emma Holloway, That Really Ruffles My Feathers directed by Colin Kirkpatrick, Beyond Brains directed by Lorena Da Cruz, and The One in Red directed by Nicholas Muzzillo.

As Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to top the box office, 四虎影视 of Art and Design is celebrating the film鈥檚 success鈥攎ade even more meaningful by the involvement of a member of our Computer Animation faculty in shaping the film鈥檚 characters.

A character with grey, black, and white skin stands in the middle of what looks like a battle field wearing a black and red fanned crown and holding a spear. More characters can be faintly seen in the background.
Concept art for the Ash Navi.

As Lead Character Designer, Computer Animation Faculty Joseph Pepe began creating the iconic Ash Na鈥檝i (Mangkwan) Clan in 2013. Pepe鈥檚 work involved meetings with Academy Award-winning writer/producer/director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau, as well as an extensive collaboration process with production designers, effects and animation teams, makeup artists, and costume designers.

Over nearly 30 years in the entertainment and effects industry, Pepe has worked in a wide range of creative roles, including visual effects artist, concept artist, and character makeup designer. His extensive film credits span numerous major productions, including Alien vs. Predator, Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, The Cabin in the Woods, and all of the Avatar films鈥攂ringing a depth of industry expertise that continues to inform his work and teaching at 四虎影视.

鈥淢y role as Lead Character Designer entailed designing and managing many aspects of the character design process,鈥 Pepe said in an Instagram post. 鈥淔rom faces and bodies to strip patterns, bioluminescence patterns, and makeup, plus many other minutiae involving character details.鈥

After the generic Ash female and male characters were designed, along with concepts for the Tlalim (Windtraders) Clan, the Sully Family, and the Recoms, Pepe began working out the specific details of evil sorceress Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. That design process stretched into 2017, including another meeting with Cameron and Landau to review screenshots from auditions.

鈥淚 had been creating initial concepts of Varang using various female faces from my selected references,鈥 Pepe said. 鈥淚 had already established the feathered headpiece, tight-bound breast ropes, and a loincloth. In the middle of 2017, Legacy Effects began their ZBrush and digital scan design process as Varang began to take shape.鈥

Pepe was also a key character designer for the original 2009 Avatar film. More details about his contribution to Avatar: Fire and Ash can be found in a new hardcover book, The Making of Avatar: Avatar | Avatar: The Way of Water | Avatar: Fire and Ash, available now. A book of artwork from the film will be released this summer.

鈥淎s each one of the sequels are released, I am honored to have been part of this team of incredible artists and people,鈥 Pepe said.

When KPop Demon Hunters dropped on Netflix this past June, no one could have predicted just how big it would become. But now, with more than 236 million views, the animated feature has officially claimed its spot as Netflix鈥檚 most popular film of all time鈥攕urpassing even its biggest live-action hits.

We鈥檙e proud to share that at least 15 alumni from our Computer Animation program were part of the creative force behind this global phenomenon. Leading the animation charge was Josh Beveridge, an alum who served as the film鈥檚 animation director

Beveridge is the Head of Character Animation at Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he has helped shape some of the most visually groundbreaking animated films of the past two decades. A graduate of 四虎影视 of Art and Design, Josh joined Imageworks in 2005 and has since worked on a long list of celebrated titles, including the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Sea Beast, Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and I Am Legend.

Josh鈥檚 work has earned him industry-wide recognition, including a Visual Effects Society Award for Spider-Verse and a nomination for I Am Legend

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters follows three superstar idols who secretly work as demon hunters. The combination of action, music, and strong animation attracted a global audience, leading to a sold-out theatrical sing-along event that topped the North American box office in late August.

As part of our series profiling graduating seniors, we are highlighting Liza Makarenko 鈥25, Computer Animation, whose thesis film, Beautify, won Gold at for Computer Animation.聽聽

The film follows a young woman named Vera as she battles a hyper-idealized version of herself that steps out of a beauty filter app. Beautify explores themes of self-worth and identity through a surreal lens, blending emotional storytelling with thriller and horror elements.

Makarenko is passionate about storytelling in all forms, especially visual storytelling. 鈥淚 love illustration and concept design, and I鈥檓 especially drawn to emotionally rich, slightly eerie narratives,鈥 she said.

As with many of the majors at the College, studying the human form plays a huge role in the growth of Computer Animation Students. In Makarenko鈥檚 commitment to figure drawing, she supplemented her studies outside of credited coursework. 鈥淚鈥檓 a big fan of figure drawing and was a regular at FEWS [Figure Enhancement Work Shop], and have gone regularly throughout my time at Ringling. It鈥檚 something that鈥檚 really helped me grow artistically and stay connected to the fundamentals.鈥

Not surprisingly, her successes follow her off-campus. Marenko was offered a coveted internship for the summer.

鈥淚鈥檓 super excited to share that I鈥檝e been offered a position as a Set Dressing TD Intern at Pixar this summer! It鈥檚 a huge opportunity, and I can鈥檛 wait to learn from and contribute to such an inspiring team,鈥 she shared. 鈥淎fter graduation, I hope to keep working in visual development or layout, telling meaningful stories and helping create emotionally impactful animated films.鈥

Pixar, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, is known for producing some of the most successful animated films of all time, including the Toy Story series, Finding Nemo, and Inside Out. As an intern, Marenko will work alongside Pixar employees and contribute as a member of the team. Interns also take part in lectures and screenings held on the Pixar campus, gaining insight into the studio鈥檚 creative process and production workflows.

四虎影视鈥檚 Computer Animation program is ranked third in the world for 3D Animation by The Rookies. Alumni win Oscars and Annies and work at leading animation studios worldwide, including Pixar.
